1892 Dr. Carter was the first dentist in Belleville, Il., arriving from New Hampshire in 1892. His Italian villa still stands (as of 2013) at 310 East Washington. This photo is here because Jane loved this home and painted it when she was in her 60's. The painting can be seen in the Oils & Watercolor section of this site.
1874 The Star-Peerless Brewery included a 3-story main building, an ice house, a cooperage, and a blacksmith shop. The cellar consisted of 4 rows of double arches containing 19 vaults with 34 50-barrel fermenting tubs. There were 6 lower cellars with the entire length over 500 feet wide and 13-feet high. Two large ponds furnished water. Prior to refrigeration, all beer needed to be delivered promptly and in 1874 1,200 barrels per month were delivered as far as a team of horses could go in a day. Star-Peerless Brewery, at 1125 Lebanon Avenue, closed in 1954. St. Teresa Church now occupies the site.
